2/11: Introduction to the Research Process

Hi Students!

I hope that those of you who acknowledge the New Year were able to celebrate as you felt best :-).

For most of you, it is the beginning of a new year. For the class, today marks the beginning of a new unit. Having completed an argumentative essay for your Diagnostic Exam and an essay analyzing it in detail, you have learned many things in the 5 paragraph writing assignments.

We will now move on to a unit I hope we all enjoy since it will be based on our own research interests.

To start off this windy Monday, please watch how Spongebob writes an essay!

We'll follow this with a group discussion on the process of writing the research paper and why it is important.

After, find a partner and work on the Ordering Activity Handout. You should decide the order of the steps based on what you think should be first, second, ..., last. Please write 1-2 sentences for each step explaining its meaning, why you think it is important, and how you should complete it.

See the Research Paper Overview Handout and compare the list here with what you have done yourselves - any major differences? Can we apply all these steps to any research topic?

Remember, we will work together during this process so although you may feel overwhelmed, as long as you follow the steps accordingly - in class and out - you will do fine!

Homework: Remember that for Wednesday's class (Feb. 13, 2013), we will meet at the Undergraduate Library in Room 291. You should be sitting by 1:00 p.m.!!!

Thanks!
