2/22: Interpreting the Writing Prompt

Hi Students!

Didn't the Groundhog say Spring was right around the corner?! What's up with all of this snow?!!

Today we will be taking a closer look at the general writing prompt and possibly working toward creating a specific writing prompt for our Guided Research Paper (GRP). As part of interpreting the writing prompt, we will be conducting small group work aimed at selecting the best organization for our study.

1. Revisit the GRP Topic Form and look for the names of the organizations you proposed in earlier classes. Use the Organization Characteristics Checklist in order to justify the proposed organization specifically to our specific problem: The inappropriate disposal of waste is a primary problem of nuclear energy.

You can put into practice the skills learned during the library day workshop (using the library search options, JSTOR, CQ Researcher, Academic Search Premier, etc., keywords) to look into which organizations are proposing the best solutions to the problem.

2. Conduct a Mini-Group Presentation (1-2 min.) on the organization you are proposing. Make sure to explain why it is the best choice. Do not worry about the presentation per se, it is not the focus. The focus is that you are able to apply the criteria of a "good" organization to the organizations on solving the topic problem. You should remember to recheck with the checklist used before.

We will be keeping track of the organizations, the justifications, and then vote.

Note: If I haven't highlighted your IRP topic green on the form, you should see me before class ends today!

Thanks, and please remember to stay safe!!!
