3/6: Source Reliability

Hi Students!!

I hope to cover the following during our class meeting today:

1. Questions on IRP & GRP guidelines, format, outline, etc.; IRP Pre-Research Portfolio; IRP Pre-Research Chart, etc.

2. Introduction of new module: Unit 3: Annotated Bibliography (still for GRP and IRP)

3. Housekeeping on grades, feedback, participation, etc.

For #2, please follow along:

Today is the start of Unit 3: Annotated Bibliography. We will be completing an Annotated Bibliography together as a group for our GRP. You will create an individual one for your IRP. I will expand on this more in the upcoming days, but for now, you can click on the Major Assignments tab to see a description.

Introduction to Website Reliability
In pairs, spend a minute looking at each of the websites on the third slide of the Evaluating Sources PowerPoint. Would you or would you not use this website in a research paper? Why?

Our aim: to learn what makes a website reliable.

How to Evaluate Website Reliability
We will continue discussion throughout the PowerPoint presentation. The purpose here is to explain what should be taken into consideration when evaluating the reliability of a website.

Hands-on Practice!!
Now that we know what we have to look out for, use the Website Reliability Checklist and evaluate one of the following websites in small groups:

http://www.greenamerica.org/programs/climate/dirtyenergy/nuclear.cfm

http://www.theonion.com/articles/nuclear-waste-accumulating,15032/

http://www.world-nuclear.org/

http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2011/04/nuclear-overseers-are-fake-agencies-funded-and-controlled-by-the-nuclear-power-industry.html

http://www.dhmo.org/

Homework:

1. Using the Website Reliability Checklist, analyze the website you have proposed for your IRP organization. Bring a printed and completed to class on Friday, March 8, 2013.

2. Finish your IRP Pre-Research Portfolio by today if you still have not done so.

Thanks!
