The purpose of this course is to teach students how to organize and write for their academic career and eventual profession. Here are some details of the work you are expected to do this semester in ESL 115 to meet this goal:
* 2 Reflective Essays (300 words or 1 page)
* Diagnostic Analysis Essay (2-3 pages)
* Annotated Bibliography for GRP (3 sources, selected by instructor)
* Guided Research Paper (GRP) (3-5 pages)
* Annotated Bibliography for IRP (5 sources, selected by student)
* Individual Research Paper (IRP) (5-7 pages)
* 5-7 minute Oral Presentation of the Individual Research Paper
Topics for the Individual Research Paper may relate directly to your own current course work in your major field or a topic of interest, but with a few restraints:
* All assignments must be written for a general audience.
* All topics must be pre-approved by the instructor.
* You may NOT use a paper that you are writing for another class. Chances are that even if the topic is the same, the process will not be. THIS IS PLAGIARISM.

2 Reflective Essays
These mini-essays are not graded on grammar or paragraph structure, but instead on the quality of reflection. The purpose is for you to think about your writing, the writing process, or how you have improved in an area of your writing skills.
Diagnostic Analysis Essay
You will write an exploratory essay (2-3 pages) that analyzes the changes that you made to your diagnostic and then the changes that you would recommend in order for the essay to be successfully revised so that the writer intention matches the reader perception in a coherent way. More details will be provided in the corresponding class lesson, and also in the Homework session.
2 Annotated Bibliographies
These assignments will help students evaluate and reflect on the sources that they find. Possible questions you may address in your annotations are: What kind of information is found in this source? (short summary) How could I use this source in my paper? How do I know if the source is reliable? These questions should be answered in 200-300 words for each source, following an APA format. This should be done for the Guided Research Paper (3 sources provided by the instructor) and the Individual Research Paper (5 sources chosen by the student) to help the students refine their research and analysis/evaluation skills.
Guided Research Paper
A research paper is the culmination of an involved process of research, critical thinking, source evaluation, organization, and composition. For this assignment, as a group, we will choose a topic for the whole class. The instructor provides you with three sources to use in annotated bibliography, discussing the content and how they can be used. You should not use outside sources. This paper will be structured as a problem-solution paper, and an outline will be provided or modeled for students to use.
Individual Research Paper
This paper is also structured as a problem-solution paper, this time using a minimum of five academic sources, located by the student. You each choose your own topic, however, it must be approved by the instructor. The most important skills to be emphasized for this assignment are source synthesis and critique.
Oral Presentation
Using PowerPoint, Prezi, or another visual aid, you will present your Individual Research Paper to the class. Two to three class lessons will introduce how to give an effective presentation, and this assignment will be good practice in acquiring and polishing your presentation skills.
Each of these assignments (plus homework, and attendance) will comprise a large portion of the final grade, but more importantly, doing them will prepare you to succeed in your major field and earn your degree.
